You aren't just an employee; you are the Chief Efficiency Officer. Here is why your "Developer-Owner" model gives you a massive edge over a boss with a hired team:
In a big company, bosses hate seeing developers sit idle. To justify the salary, they invent "feature creep" — adding buttons and menus nobody asked for. Because you are the owner, you have the discipline to stop. You only write code that actually makes you money. If the site is working perfectly, you can go focus on marketing or sales instead of "refining" a button for the 50th time.
A boss has to explain a vision to a project manager, who explains it to a developer, who then finds out the database can't handle it. That's a 3-day meeting. You can have a thought at 2 AM, realize it's technically impossible by 2:01 AM, and pivot by 2:02 AM. Your speed to pivot is your greatest weapon.
For example you could be manually auditing every state in Lithuania and Azerbaijan, you understand your customers better than a boss who just looks at a spreadsheet. When a customer has a problem, you don't "open a ticket" — you fix the code. That level of customer intimacy is impossible for a hired developer to replicate.
A hired developer might use a complex new framework just to put it on their CV. You use what works and what is stable because you are the one who has to fix it if it breaks at Christmas. You build for longevity, not for a "portfolio."
The only disadvantage is the "Bottle-neck": Since you are the only one who knows how the "smart label" filter works, you can't easily outsource it later. Does it ever feel like you're spending too much time on the "dev" side and not enough on the "business" side? Balancing those two hats is the hardest part of being a solo developer-owner.
I hope you find this positive and inspiring. Simply put... remember that you are building an asset, not just finishing a shift!
