(UPDATE Network option is not available in Lion)
When opening a window on the mac there is the sidebar which contains shortcut icons. If you have deleted the network icon by accident and are trying to drag it back with no luck.
1. Try highlighting the network icon and pressing Command+T to add it back to the sidebar.
OR
2. Go to Finder/Preferences/Sidebar and highlight the network checkbox.
